Unlike an installation of iTunes on a Mac/PC it does not support podcasts, iTunes U, apps, and the like (or allow access to the iTunes store, of course). The Synology iTunes server is very simple to set up, just requiring a share name and (optional) password. I'll have my Lightroom library on the NAS and take it from there. My intention is to have it set up for mirroring instead of speed, as some folks do with them. The main reason I'm getting it, though, is to have more storage space for photos, as well as having redundant space for a bit of safety. Any issues you had setting it up? Any tips/advice to provide? We have a mix of Macs (mostly) and PCs, so I'll have to see if that will work or not. I'm thinking of having one disk be an iTunes server, allowing the whole house to access the music there instead of keeping it on separate computers as it currently is. My Synology should arrive tomorrow, and I'll work on getting it set up this weekend, as I can. Oh, and although Synology does also allow video/audio streaming using DLNA, that protocol is not supported by Apple devices!
#SYNOLOGY NAS TIME MACHINE SLOW TV#
Unfortunately Apple TV seems to require Home Sharing. The Synology iTunes server appears to support the first option, but not the second.

iTunes has two options for sharing video/audio: the basic "Share my library on the local network" and "Home sharing". I just got the basic Synology DS215j (although I was tempted by the larger models). Here's the relevant text from the Synology Web site: It doesn't SPECIFICALLY mention AppleTV, but it DOES talk about streaming video from similar devices. And I just looked at the DS415play, and it appears to support video streaming.

I just ordered a Synology DS1515+, partly because it's expandable via a couple of expansion units.

Which model did you get? I'm not sure, but I THINK the ones with "play" in their names would do what you are wanting done.
